About This Business

The Optimist Club of Uxbridge is a volunteer service club chartered by Optimist International in January 1969, devoted to bringing out the best in youth. Club members are community volunteers who direct all locally raised funds to youth-centred causes in Uxbridge. The club's flagship project is the annual Fantasy of Lights, a drive-through holiday light display at Elgin Park featuring more than one hundred community-built displays and running December 5, 2026 to January 2, 2027, with donations supporting youth programs. Other initiatives the club has led or supported include the Jr. Optimist youth leadership club, scholarships for graduating students, instruments for school bands, the Springtide youth stage, food-bank soup kitchen volunteering, and the development of a disc golf course and pump park. New volunteers are welcome and there is no membership fee. Anyone interested in helping can reach out to the club by email at any time.

Charities

100 Men of Scugog

100 Men of Scugog is a charitable giving circle of local men supporting Scugog-area charities. Members gather for one-hour meetings at the Port Perry Legion, where three local charities each give a five-minute presentation and answer questions; members then vote and each writes a $100 cheque directly to the winning charity. Every dollar goes straight to local charity — there are no committees, no bank account and no fees. Founded in January 2015, the group celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2025 and has raised nearly a quarter of a million dollars for Scugog-area charities to date, including creating a bursary for Durham College students. New members are welcome at quarterly meetings.

The 41 Port Perry Army Cadet Corps is a free youth program for ages 12 to 18, and the fourth-oldest cadet corps in Canada, formed in 1898 and affiliated with the Ontario Regiment. Cadets build leadership, citizenship and self-confidence through drill, marksmanship, music, fitness and community service, and the corps is active at Scugog community events including Remembrance Day ceremonies and parades. The corps parades on Monday and Wednesday evenings during the training year and new cadets can join through the online application on its website. Co-sponsored by Royal Canadian Legion Branch 419.
